MASTERCLASS
Turkish Folk Music
May 2025, Ayvalik - Aegean Sea
--------------------
20 professional French musicians explored Turkish makams and folk music from three regions — the Black Sea, Thrace, and the Aegean — during workshops led by three artist-teachers who are among the greatest virtuosos in their respective artistic fields:
• Ayşenur Kolivar (vocals workshop): Songs and music from the Black Sea
• Salih Korkut Peker (strings workshop): Djumbuch, fretless guitar, and Aegean repertoire
• Ahmet Özden (winds workshop): Zourna and music from Thrace
The workshops were held in our residency space, the Karagöz Art Center, and two other venues in the splendid museum-city of Ayvalik.
During this one-week program, the three artist-teachers gave a sublime concert at Fabrika Ayvalik. And what better way to wrap up this intense week than with a legendary jam session at Frans Bistro, where the participants experimented and share on stage the lessons they’d learned during the masterclass.
A huge thank you to our instructors Ayşenur Kolivar, Salih Korkut Peker, Ahmet Özden, the pedagogic coordinator Laurent Clouet, our local partners Fabrika Ayvalik and Frans Bistro, and of course to the interns with whom we experienced a surreal week, both artistically and personally.
